February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month and an ideal time to learn about and recognize the contributions and history of African Americans. In celebration of this month enjoy these facts about black history and Black History Month.

Black History Month Facts

  • Black History Month began as a week-long celebration in the 1920s.
  • Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week
  • February is also the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
  • George Washington Carver derived over 300 products from peanuts.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. and Condoleezza Rice both started college at the age of 15.
  • Madam CJ Walker was America’s first self-made woman to become a millionaire.
2015 Theme
Each year Black History Month has a different theme. This year’s theme is, “Civil Rights in America.”
